Why Visualizing Your Future is Hard and What to Do About It
Ever feel stuck when trying to imagine your future? You’re not alone. Conventional wisdom says that to redesign your life, you need to visualize it first. But what if future thinking feels impossible—or just really uncomfortable?
Here’s the thing: our brains are naturally wired to project ahead, whether we’re imagining exciting possibilities or catastrophizing about everything that could go wrong. But if you find yourself blocked—especially when it comes to picturing a positive future—there’s a reason for that. And today, we’re diving into why this happens and what you can do about it.
Three Common Blocks to Future Thinking
- You over-rely on the past to predict the future – Past experiences influence new experiences instead of considering different possibilities.
- You may not have developed the skill of future thinking – If your path has always been clear-cut, future thinking may be a brand new skill for you.
- You're WAY too busy to think about your future – When you’re just trying to keep up with daily life, long-term visioning isn't always a top priority
What You Can Do About It
- Acknowledge where you are
- Bring curiosity instead of judgment
- Practice with small prompts
- Remember, you don’t have to figure this out alone
